A New Jersey family is mourning the loss of an 11-year-old girl who committed suicide at school following a long history of being bullied.
On February 6th, a student located sixth grader Felicia LoAlbo-Melendez unresponsive inside a bathroom stall at F.W. Holbein School in Mount Holly. The child immediately alerted school staff, who sprang into action to save Melendez. An ambulance took her to a nearby hospital before transferring her to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Sadly, she passed away on February 8th.
While the manner of death was not revealed, an autopsy performed by the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that she died due to suicide. The shocking death occurred just two weeks after her father, NJ Transit Detective Alexis Melendez, passed away from pancreatic cancer. One week before Melendez took her life, her mother, Elaina LoAlbo, emailed the school about her daughter being bullied. The girl herself had also reached out to school officials several times to report being taunted on campus to no avail.
“They have swept under the rug, the bullying that she and so many other kids in that school have encountered,” LoAlbo stated. She is now accusing the school of trying to quickly close the probe into her death without getting any proper answers.
In another email to her school, the bright young student requested permission to start a “trauma club” to help students deal with issues troubling them. LoAlbo said her daughter was trying to stand up for many children being teased with no relief while undergoing her own battles.
The school board informed parents of Melendez’s death but did not mention her by name or reveal that she passed away after relentless bullying. They added mental health resources to the notice but have not responded to multiple media requests for comment.
