Following Thursday night’s game against Oklahoma City, 14 Atlanta Hawks players got their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
According to ESPN, the team announced that 36 individuals from the NBA team’s operation, including staff and the 14 players, received their first dose after meeting state eligibility requirements. Many were eligible because they met the standard that anyone with a body mass index over 25% is eligible.
However, three players did not get vaccinated because they did not qualify.
“Increasing access to health, wellness, and play throughout the greater Atlanta community continues to be a priority for our organization,” the statement said. “As eligibility for vaccination continues to expand, we intend to use our platform and influence to encourage and educate citizens on the importance of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as you are eligible, especially younger adults and communities of color.”
The Hawks and the New Orleans Pelicans are the only teams that have confirmed players and staff have received their first dose.
