At least 14 students and one teacher were killed Tuesday after a gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed the shooter is dead and is believed to be killed by responding officers.
Abbott also identified the shooter as an 18-year-old Salvador Ramos who resided in Uvalde. The governor said in the briefing that the shooter abandoned his vehicle, then entered the school with a handgun and possibly a rifle.
“He shot and killed horrifically and incomprehensibly 14 students and killed a teacher,” Abbott said.
The killer is also believed to have shot his own grandmother before entering the school and opening fire again.
“When parents drop their kids off at school, they have every expectation to know that they’re going to be able to pick their child up when that school day ends. And there are families who are in mourning right now,” Abbott said. “The state of Texas is in mourning with them for the reality that these parents are not going to be able to pick up their children.”
Two responding officers were also injured in the shooting. They are expected to recover.
