Former NFL WR Sam Hurd was not only a 28 year old husband and father with no criminal record, but also a wannabe drug kingpin who attempted to move large amounts of cocaine and marijuana.
In December 2011 Hurd was arrested outside of a Chicago steakhouse after an apparent drug sting. Hurd attempted to buy a a kilo of cocaine from an undercover cop. Hurd told the undercover agent that he wanted 5 to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute in the Chicago area and that he moves 4 kilos a week. The cop delivered the cocaine inside of a bag labeled Happy Birthday.
Last April Hurd plead guilty to one count of trying to buy and distribute large amounts of cocaine and marijuana which carries a MINIMUM 10 year sentence. The US District Attorney did admit that Hurd’s drug days didn’t amount to any actual “drug deals” only agreements. As Hurd stood before the judge with his plea, he apologized saying “I’m sorry for everything I’ve done.” He continues by saying, “I have a lot of regrets. I regret not thinking about the consequences.”
Months after his guilty plea, Sam Hurd was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in attempting to set up a massive drug operation spanning three states. “Everything I’ve done in relation to this case is a direct result of my marijuana addiction and would get me and lead me to more marijuana,” Hurd said.
How does a 28 year old man go from having a family, wife and no criminal history to trying to push massive amounts of drugs? Sure, he admits to smoking weed all day, every day, but so do a lot of other people and they aren’t out here trying to be Tony Montana. Someone has obviously been watching one too many rap videos. He skipped right past the nickel and diming stage of drug dealing and now he’s going to do 15 years in jail before he even got to enjoy the fruits of his non-existent labor.
