Uber has become one of the most convenient, safest, ways to get around the city. Despite this, you must still take precautions and never let your guard down. 16 year old Harley Quinn Smith, daughter of Kevin Smith, had a very scary experience and luckily was able to think fast.
According to Harley, the incident occurred at a Los Angeles area Starbucks as she waited for her Uber car to arrive. She says that a large, beige car drove up to her and attempted to convince her they were her Uber. Inside the car were two white male, aged 20-30. They also had an Uber placard in their window. Harley says that she began to notice something was fishy, so she started asking questions.
“When I asked who they were there to pick up, making sure it was the right car, they wouldn’t answer me and said to get in the car,” Harley says. “They didn’t have the Uber app on their phone and were clearly just two disgusting dudes trying to kidnap a girl standing on her own.”
She tells Good Morning America, “The second I started talking to them, I realized they were definitely not Uber drivers. They had just printed out the Uber symbol and put it at the front of their car.”
With all of the parties for Super Bowl, All Star Weekend, Valentine’s Day and CIAA coming up, it’s important to be safe. When ordering an Uber, always make sure that the Name, Face, Car & License Plate on the app matches the car that you are getting into. Also ask the driver to confirm their name, or who they are here to pick up. NEVER get into an Uber if there is someone else in the passenger’s seat (unless you are doing Carpool). If there is more than one person, cancel your trip and file a complaint with Uber.
Stay safe guys!!
Despite the scary ordeal, Harley says that she has not given up on her favorite ride service. “I proceeded to take an Uber because you can’t let things like that stop you from living your life,” she tells Good Morning America.
