More than 180 people were killed due to gun violence this past Fourth of July weekend.
According to data gathered by Gun Violence Archive, more than 180 people were killed, and 516 people were injured in shootings that took place across the nation, CBS News reports. In just the first five days in July, there were 20 mass shootings.
“There have now been 20 mass shootings in July, 336 on the year. The 14 mass shootings over this past holiday weekend (Friday to Sunday) are the most of any weekend in 2021,” the organization said in a tweet.
At least 82 people were shot in Chicago. Fourteen of the 82 died, CBS Chicago reports. Police in New York City said 26 victims in 21 shootings that happened over the holiday weekend. Five people were shot, and three were killed in Dallas. Cincinnati also showed reports of fatal shootings.
According to Gun Violence Archive, there have been 22,662 gun violence deaths in 2021. The cases include all causes like murder, suicide, unintentional killings, as well as others. CBS News reports there have been 336 mass shootings and 16 mass murders.
