The Department of Defense is sending 2,000 more California National Guard troops into Los Angeles, ramping up federal presence as protests tied to immigration enforcement continue to shake the city. The troops are being deployed under Title 10, a federal authority President Trump invoked earlier this month.
These soldiers aren’t new to the mission—they were already greenlit last week and are now being brought into the active zone to support existing federal security. That brings the current count to nearly 5,000 military personnel on L.A. soil, including over 2,000 Guard members and 700 Marines.
The Pentagon says their role is clear: protect federal property, staff, and operations as immigration enforcement actions draw pushback. Protesters have taken to the streets of downtown L.A. after a string of raids by ICE and other federal agencies.
But state leaders are not having it.
California Governor Gavin Newsom slammed the latest announcement, calling it nothing more than “clean up” by the Pentagon. According to Newsom’s office, these troops were pulled from wildfire and border duty and are now being used for what he calls Trump’s “political theater.”
The tension is more than political—it’s legal. Newsom has filed a lawsuit arguing that federalizing California’s National Guard without state approval violates constitutional boundaries. A federal judge briefly blocked the troop surge last week, but that decision was quickly overturned by an appeals court. Now, the 9th Circuit is reviewing whether Trump overstepped his authority under Title 10.
Trump’s memo claims the troop deployment is temporary and strictly for federal protection. But critics argue the increased military presence in a city with a diverse and sizable immigrant population is only escalating an already tense situation.
The Guard is reportedly undergoing crowd control and de-escalation training before hitting the streets.
As L.A. remains on edge, the legal fight over who really controls the Guard—and why they’re in the city—continues to unfold in courtrooms and communities alike.
