The 2024-2025 NFL season is poised to be a landmark year, as it marks a record number of Black minority owners across various teams, signaling a much-needed shift toward diversity and inclusion in the realm of professional sports ownership.
For decades, the NFL has been owned by wealthy, predominantly white individuals or families. The league’s ownership has reflected broader societal systems, where access to capital and networks has often been restricted for minority groups. However, thanks to increasing awareness about representation and the critical role diversity plays in shaping both business and sports, several Black entrepreneurs, entertainers, and former athletes have stepped into ownership roles. Jay-Z held a minority stake in the Brooklyn Nets for almost a decade, which helped open the door for other Black rappers and entrepreneurs to pursue team ownership. This season, their presence is larger than ever.
Of this season’s twelve minority owners, five are with the Atlanta Falcons. Will Packer, Dominique Dawes, Rosalind Brewer, Rashaun Williams, and Warrick Dunn have all taken their talents to Atlanta. Venus and Serena Williams are part owners of the Miami Dolphins. Magic Johnson is a part of the Washington Commanders, while John Stallworth is with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mellody Hobson, Condoleeza Rice, and Lewis Hamilton are all owners of the Denver Broncos. This lineup is Black excellence personified, bringing a plethora of knowledge from multiple industries.

The presence of Black owners in the NFL carries significant weight. For a league where more than 70% of the players are Black, ownership has long been an area where diversity was glaringly absent. Representation matters because it opens doors for new voices, ideas, and perspectives to influence the direction of the teams and the league.
The 2024-2025 NFL season marks an exciting chapter in the league’s history. As we celebrate this milestone, it is crucial to acknowledge the ongoing journey toward full equity and the power of diverse leadership in shaping the future of the NFL. With each new Black minority owner, the league inches closer to a future where ownership reflects the rich diversity of the players, fans, and communities that make the NFL the powerhouse it is today.
