Anna Wintour has established Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Zendaya, and Jennifer Lopez as co-chairs for the 2024 Met Gala.
On Thursday, February 15th, Vogue made official announcements for the Met Gala happening on Monday, May 6th. This year’s dress code is set as “The Garden of Time” with a theme of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” celebrating vintage fashion and fairytales from long ago. According to Vogue, this year’s dress code is an allusion to “fleeting beauty,” while the term “sleeping beauties” refers to the inspiration of the treasured garments in the museum’s collection and their fragility unable to be worn again.
“More modern, less delicate pieces imbued with the same spirit as the spotlit fashions will be showcased alongside them, and broken up into three sub-themes: Land, Sea, and Sky,” Vogue wrote. “It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,” said Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge. “One thing I hope this show will activate is that sensorial appreciation of fashion.”
This year will mark Hemsworth’s first-ever attendance at the Met Gala and Bad Bunny’s third appearance. With the ladies being Met Gala pros, Zendaya has honored the benefit with her presence five times, while Jennifer Lopez has graced the event as a 13-time attendee. Alongside the influential co-chairs, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson are set to be this year’s honorary chairs, with TikTok as the gala’s sponsor.
Rihanna, Usher, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, Idris Elba, Dwayne Wade, and Michael B. Jordan are some of the celebrities who have graced the fashionable event’s red carpet in the past. Reminiscing on some of the iconic looks in previous years, one can only ponder on what this year’s fashion statements will declare.
