The 2024 Video Music Awards is slowly approaching, making it the perfect time to look back at some of the most memorable moments from the annual event. From Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift‘s acceptance speech to Drake professing his love for Rihanna, the VMAs have a long history of providing us with entertaining content that seems to stick in the minds of viewers. Check out some of our favorite moments from the award show.
Janet Jackson’s Tribute to Michael Jackson (2009)
In 2009, the world was hit with an unexpected tragedy: the death of music legend Michael Jackson. His untimely passing occurred just a few months before the VMAs took place, and to commemorate his life and legacy, his sister Janet Jackson took the stage to deliver a remarkable tribute. The performance featured dance breaks from some of Michael’s iconic hits, including “Bad,” “Thriller,” and “Smooth Criminal.” However, the highlight of the night was the moment Janet graced the stage to perform “Scream,” a duet featuring herself and Michael. The performance ended with Janet successfully executing their signature dance, which was seen in the music video.
Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus (2015)
The 2015 VMAs will be remembered for producing the legendary “Miley, what’s good?” line. After accepting the Best Hip-Hop Video, Nicki Minaj took a moment to address host Miley Cyrus and publicly call her out. The confrontation was sparked by comments Miley made about Nicki during a pre-show interview, where she criticized the rapper for her reaction to an award nomination. Despite Miley attempting to dismiss the situation, Nicki later spoke on the matter in an interview with the New York Times, stating that she was bothered by Miley making comments about something that affected black women.
Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift (2009)
One of the most controversial moments in VMA history is the night Kanye West’s intrusive thoughts won. In 2009, singer Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video award for her song “You Belong With Me.” As Taylor gave her acceptance speech, Kanye felt the award should’ve been given to Beyonce and had no problems letting it be known. He took the stage to interrupt Taylor, grabbing the microphone to say, “I’m really happy for you, and ima let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.” The moment was met with boos from the crowd and Taylor being confused by the entire incident. As a result, Kanye was promptly removed from the award show.
Drake Confesses His Love for Rihanna (2016)
For a while, many rumors circulated amongst fans and social media users that Drake was in love with Rihanna. But, in 2016, the OVO founder confirmed everyone’s suspicion. While presenting her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Drake wore his heart on his sleeve and revealed that Rihanna was “someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old.” But that wasn’t the most shocking moment of the speech. Once Rihanna attempted to grab the award from Drake, it seemed the two shared a brief kiss before Rihanna began her speech, adding fuel to the fire regarding their rumored relationship.
Beyonce’s Pregnancy Reveal (2011)
Of course, we cannot mention memorable VMA moments without speaking on Beyonce’s pregnancy reveal. The singer took the stage to deliver a showstopping performance of her single, “Love On Top.” However, in typically Bey fashion, the singer had a secret up her sleeve that she waited until the end of her performance to share. Once she had concluded the song, Bey unbuttoned her blazer to reveal her baby bump and formally announce her pregnancy with her first child, Blu Ivy.
