21 Savage says his “American Dreams” trailer, which featured Donald Glover portraying the rapper, was indeed a parody.
The rapper sat down with Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” to speak about his new album. The trailer sparked laughs and raised eyebrows after Glover was seen with face tats and locs in his role as Savage. Caleb McLaughlin also portrayed the rapper in his youth. Jabari Banks played his friend and producer Metro Boomin in the mini-film. While some took it as a real movie, Savage says it was all a joke.
“Nah, that was a parody,” he told Sharpe, though he was not completely opposed to the idea of a biopic about his life. “I feel like it could be one day. They would hate on it now, though. Because they gon’ be like, ‘What the f**k 21 Savage deserve a story for, a movie about him for? What he did?’ You know how they do.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, Savage shared how well he used to do in school as a child, especially in spelling bees.
“I was an excellent student up until a certain grade. We was just talking about this last night. We was playing the game, and they was like, ‘Spell Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,’ and it was crazy cause I won the spelling bee in fifth grade spelling that same word. And I won the math competition that same year,” he explained to Sharpe before admitting that he gave up on school after realizing he was an immigrant and believing certain privileges such as college and better jobs may not have been afforded to him.
Thankfully, his musical talents have afforded him a life he could only dream of back then. Even with the very unserious trailer, “American Dreams” has earned rave reviews from his fans and rap colleagues alike. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
