A deadly roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo has left at least 44 people dead, including Nelsy Cruz, governor of Montecristi province, and a member of the performing band.
The tragedy occurred early Tuesday morning during a live performance by merengue singer Rubby Pérez. According to emergency officials, the roof of the popular venue gave way unexpectedly, sending debris crashing down on the crowd.
Search and rescue teams continue to work through the rubble. Authorities estimate more than 150 people have been hospitalized, with 138 ambulance transports reported so far.
Dominican President Luis Abinader confirmed the death of Governor Cruz, whose brother, former MLB star Nelson Cruz, shared that her funeral will take place Tuesday evening in Montecristi.
Perez survived the collapse and is in stable condition. His daughter, Zulinka Pérez, said he began singing under the debris so rescuers could find him. Sadly, his saxophonist was among those killed.
The nightclub, known as a landmark in the city’s nightlife scene, issued a statement saying it is fully cooperating with authorities to determine what led to the collapse.
Dominican officials, including the Minister of Culture and Santo Domingo’s mayor, expressed their condolences, calling it a devastating moment for the city and the nation. President Abinader visited the site and said saving lives remains the government’s top priority.
Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities continue to search for any remaining survivors in the wreckage.
