Two 3-year-old twins died after being discovered unresponsive and alone in a car while their mother jumped off a Miami overpass.
According to a press release from the Miami-Dade Police Department, Officers responded to a medical emergency early Friday morning after receiving a call reporting that the children, identified as Milendhet and Milendhere Napoleon-Cadet had been found unresponsive.
Both toddlers were found foaming at the mouth in the backseat of an SUV on the northbound lanes of the Interstate 95 ramp near the Turnpike extension around 2 a.m.
After officers arrived, the twins’ mother, 42-year-old Shirlene Napoleon Alcime, jumped over the expressway wall onto the train tracks below in an apparent suicide.
The toddlers were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead, authorities confirmed. The cause of death is still unknown.
Police have confirmed that Alcime survived the significant fall but arrived at the hospital in critical condition.
MPDP Detective Andre Martin told reporters, “Right now, our investigators are working to piece this tragic incident together,” per WPLG.
“There are many, many questions that they have that they’re working to find the answers to,” he added.
The twins father, Milson Caldet, speaking Haitian Creole told NBC Miami and WPLG, “I really loved my kids.” He said, “I don’t know about what happened today, why my kids passed away.”
He added that the children had no known health conditions.
According to NBC Miami, Cadet, who is not married to Alcime but resides with the family, stated that he had not seen the children or their mother since Wednesday and had been trying to contact them.
“He said he’s not going to feel okay now,” said a neighbor, who was translating for Cadet.
Alcime’s friend Suzette Walker Morant told the outlet that she could not imagine her hurting her kids or attempting suicide.
“That’s not her. There has to be something wrong with her for her to do something like that,” noting that she had also not seen Alcime in days.
“She is not that kind of person, so it is so mind-boggling right now to figure out what really went wrong.”
