One person has been found, one body has been recovered and 38 others are still missing after a boat turned over off the Florida coast.
A search for 38 people has continued through Wednesday. On Tuesday, sailors passing by on a ship spotted a man hanging on to a capsized boat, which is what ignited the search, Yahoo! Entertainment reports. The boat, which was turned over by extreme weather, set sail Saturday night from Bimini in the Bahamas, and its destination was Florida. The boat turned over about 45 miles east of Fort Pierce, which is about 125 miles north of Miami.
Coast Guard Captain Jo-Ann Burden says human smuggling is suspected, as no one on board had a life jacket on. The man that was found is now being treated for sun exposure and dehydration.
“It is dire the longer they remain in the water,” Burdian said. “Without food, without water, the sun, the sea conditions. … Every moment that passes it becomes much dier and more unlikely that someone could survive.”
Ships, planes and other aircraft have joined the search. The news outlet reports that what appeared to be a body was found and collected. Burdian says it is her team’s highest priority to find the rest of the people missing. However, she said “we can’t search forever.”
