The Inspector General for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has identified more than 40 deputies who are allegedly members of gang-like groups that operate out of two sheriff’s stations.
According to The LA Times, Inspector General Max Huntsman’s office has compiled a list that includes 11 deputies who work out of the East L.A. sheriff’s station that are also allegedly members of the Banditos and 30 more who work in the Compton sheriff’s station and are alleged members of a gang called the Executioners.
In a letter dated Monday, Huntsman said the list is based on information obtained from several investigations conducted by the Sheriff’s Department. He did not release the names of deputies but did confirm that his office has identified other possible members from additional sources.
“LASD has never thoroughly investigated allegations of gang corruption, and this case is no exception,” Huntsman told The Times.
The Sheriff’s Department addressed the claims in a post on their Facebook page saying, Huntsman’s letter “failed to provide any actual evidence or new information” and noted that the agency has provided the inspector general with “all legally obtainable information requested.”
“This is another irresponsible attempt from Mr. Huntsman to discredit the organization, through omission and misrepresentation,” the post stated. “The timing of this letter suggests Mr. Huntsman is using his public office and resources to campaign against the sheriff leading up to the June primaries.”
The inspector general’s new data adds to a growing body of information about the secretive groups, which have existed in the Sheriff’s Department for decades. These members usually get matching tattoos and go by group names such as the “Jump Out Boys” and the “Grim Reapers.”
