Around 5 million Georgia votes will be recounted due to Donald Trump’s request surrounding his election loss.
According to NPR, the request was made because it falls within the margins to be recounted.
Georgia residents cast 4,998,482 votes, Biden beat Trump by 12,670 of those votes. That’s about 0.26%—the state law allows votes to be recounted if there is 0.5 or lower percent lead. The request must be made within two days of certification.
This recount will be different than the one done by workers who counted the ballots by hand last week. This time the votes will be recounted by a scanner.
Trump is trying to do everything he can to reverse his loss, including legal actions in states like Georgia, which is led by Republican lawmakers.
The Trump campaign demanded that the recount include signature matching of absentee ballots, even though Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office said that fulfilling such a request is illegal and impossible.
“Let’s stop giving the People false results,” the Trump campaign said without offering any evidence. “There must be a time when we stop counting illegal ballots.”
There is no evidence that illegal ballots have been counted in Georgia.
Trump, the head of the Georgia Republican Party, as well as every member on the state’s 2021 Republican U.S. House delegation, have attacked Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and the governor Brian Kemp. The group accuses Georgia and its officials of not having adequate election measures in place.
Kemp is following the law that says he’s required to recount the ballots but has called on Raffensperger to do a random audit of the absentee-ballot signatures, a move that shows his stance with Trump’s conspiracy theory that some are fraudulent.
“I’ve been saying that half of America will be happy and half of America will be sad with these results,” Raffensperger said. “And I would be disappointed when I put on my Republican hat, but these will be the results and it will be what it is because that is the will of the Georgia voter.”
