5 Quotes From Black Girls Rock That Every #BlackGirl Needs to Hear – blogged by: @proudlylauren

The 10th anniversary of Black Girls Rock aired Tuesday and it was amazing per usual. A full house of beautiful and powerful black women, under one roof, honoring what gets ignored so often, is pure #blackgirlmagic. Tracee Ellis Ross was the host of the show (a bomb host I must say) which honored Shonda Rhimes, Rihanna, the creators of #blacklivesmatter and more. Watching all of those black women receive various awards was nothing short of empowering, but what was even more moving were the quotes these beautiful black girls left us with once they graced the stage.

In fact they were so moving, we decided to gather the 5 most empowering quotes from the various beautiful black women that took the stage.

1. Extremely successful musician, performer, and model Rihanna took the stage to tell young black women everywhere how important it is to be yourself and own your truth. The quote that stuck out the most though: “The minute you learn to love yourself you won’t want to be anyone else.”

2. The founder of Black Girls Rock, Beverly Bond, preached similar to Rihanna, reaffirming the importance of loving and owning who you are. She commanded that black girls remember to: “Own your magic, walk in your purpose and rock your truth.”

3. Co-Founder of #blacklivesmatter, Opal Tometi, also shared a few affirmative words, informing the uninformed that: “We {black girls} stand on the shoulder of giants who paved the way for black dignity.”

4. If you know about ABC then you know about Shonda Rhimes. She is the creative mastermind and genius behind Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder (all of which hold a prime time spot on a nationally syndicated station). She was sure to let black girls know: “You have a right to the universe. You are given that right simply by being born.”

5. Iyanla Vanzant, popular inscriptional speaker, and star of Starting Over and Oprah’s LifeClass (both on the Oprah Winfrey Network) got on stage and simplified the magic in #blackgirlsmagic with her powerful quote: “Black girls rock because they just can’t help themselves.”

I don’t know about you, but as soon as I was done watching I was even more proud to be a black woman than I’d ever been. We face so many obstacles, both major and minor, on a daily basis, so to see all those other successful black women get on stage and drop wisdom we’ve ALL needed at one point or another, is amazing. Let this beautiful show be a reminder that black girls are the sh*t.
