Early Tuesday morning, multiple people were shot in a New York City subway station and several undetonated bombs were discovered.
Law enforcement officials told NBC New York that a man wearing what appeared to be MTA clothes was spotted throwing a device into a Brooklyn subway station before opening fire, shooting at least five individuals.
Police say they’re looking for a man about 5-foot-5, 180 pounds. He was also wearing a gas mask at the time.
It was reported that some of the injured passengers were able to jump on a train and escape.
The shooter was still on the loose an hour and a half after opening fire at the Sunset Park subway station between 36th Street and Fourth Avenue at about 8:30 a.m. Two of the five victims of the shooting were stated to be critically injured.
The degree of the other victims’ injuries was unknown, but at least 13 were transferred to nearby hospitals.
Initially, FDNY had responded to a call for smoke at the station, where they found multiple gunshot victims.
New Yorkers are advised to avoid the area and expect delays and emergency vehicles. The N/R Line was shut down from 59 Street to Atlantic Avenue, and significant delays have been reported on the B, D, F, N, Q, and R lines. The W line is suspended.
According to Councilwoman Alexa Aviles, local schools were placed on lockdown.
