An unidentified, 5-year-old boy was greeted by Utah Highway Patrol Trooper, Rick Morgan, after he was pulled over for “reckless driving.” When the trooper approached the driver’s side of the car, he was surprised to see a young adolescent behind the wheel and not an impaired driver.
The young boy was only able to drive 5 minutes away from his home to the highway after an argument with his mother.
In a video released by the patrol department, the trooper can be heard saying,” How old are you? You’re 5 years old? […] Wow! … Where did you learn to drive a car?”
Earlier, the boy had asked his mother if she would buy him a Lamborghini. When she refused to, the child decided to take matters into his own hands, while his parents were not around.
With three dollars in hand, the boy left his Ogden, Utah, home in his mother’s car, got on the freeway, and attempted to drive all the way to California to purchase himself a Lamborghini.
According to NBC News, Morgan stated the young boy was sitting on the edge of the seat so that his feet could reach the pedals, while his head was barely tall enough to “reach the headrest behind the steering wheel.”
Once the child inside the car was safely on the side of the road, Morgan said, “I helped him get the car into park, shut the vehicle down, and then we started to look for means to contact his parents.”
After the Highway Patrol contacted the 5-year-old’s family, it was revealed that his parents were at work when he took the car and had left the young boy with his sibling.
Although no one was injured during this incident, Highway Patrol Lt. Nick Street says that there is still a possibility that the child’s parents can still face charges (for leaving him at home with his sibling).
In a statement, Lt. Street stated,” We’re counting our blessings [that everyone is safe], but that doesn’t mean a high-risk situation that put a lot of people’s lives in jeopardy didn’t take place]. Based on that, we’ll talk with the county attorney and see what charges they would like filed or screened with them, and we’ll do that.”
His story is that he left home after an argument with Mom, in which she told him she would not buy him a Lamborghini. He decided he'd take the car and go to California to buy one himself. He might have been short on the purchase amount, as he only had $3 dollars in his wallet.
