Even Though New York was labeled the epicenter of COVID19, it did not stop 60 people from attending an underground party, hosted in a Brooklyn barbershop.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered the closure of all barbershops, beauty parlors, and nail salons on March 21, amid the growing pandemic. However, according to the Daily Mail, around 10 pm Sunday, NYPD busted eNVee Barbershop on Avenue L near 87th street in Canarsie. With the help of the department’s helicopters, authorities were able to detain around 60 partygoers and issued summonses for a violation of the social distance rules set by the city. Police arrested two individuals for a gun found at the location.
An unidentified man claimed he attended the party to film a music video. However, police determined the man’s story was untruthful and reported to NY Daily News; the party, which was held in the basement of the business, served “no purpose.”
The incident prompted NY Mayor Bill de Blasio to encourage citizens to alert authorities if they witness violations. ‘How do you report places that aren’t enforcing social distancing? It’s simple: just snap a photo and text it to 311-692,’ he tweeted.
Authorities would like information on businesses or individuals that are not following the rules, whether you see people not standing 6-feet apart or not wearing a mask on public transportation. By texting the number, authorities will be dispatched to the location quickly.
It comes as no surprise the measures New York is willing to make to keep the city safe. By complying with the rules, Mayor Blasio says, ‘That’s going to stop spreading this disease, and that’s going to save lives.’
As of April 22, The New York Times reports the state’s death toll stands at 14,828 total deaths.
Let us continue to do what’s best for ourselves, our families, and others as we continue to push through these tough times.
