U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at a Michigan airport found over $60,000 concealed inside menstrual pads in a travelers bag.
The discovery took place on February 3rd at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The money was bundled up inside of envelopes, which were then concealed inside the pads. The woman initially told officers that she only had $1,000. She was headed to Amsterdam when the money was found.
CBP says that its officers seized the money because the woman violated currency reporting requirements. Per U.S. law, anyone carrying more than $10,000 in or out of the country must report it to CBP officers. Those who don’t report the currency will face civil penalties or seizure of their cash.
The agency enforces the currency reporting guidelines in an effort to combat money laundering.
“I’m proud of our officers and the work they do to interrupt currency smuggling operations and illegal activities daily,” said port director Robert Larkin.
