A judge handed a 72-year-old Black woman a 6-month sentence after a jury found her guilty of assaulting a white colleague.
Merely a month ago, a Minnesota judge sentenced Sybil Garbow to six months behind bars and five years probation due to her felony assault conviction. According to reports, Garbow has to reimburse over $51,000 as restitution and turn herself in to Anoka County Workhouse Correctional Facility.
However, throughout the complete legal proceedings, Garbow has experienced frustration regarding her treatment. She claims that a significant portion of it stems from her racial background.
“If I’m the only person of color in an environment, I’m used to it because I’ve been here since 1973. But it became obvious to me that I didn’t have a strong position in this whole situation. It was scary,” Garbow said.
The incident took place while Garbow was employed as a nurse at a mental health facility located outside Minneapolis. She alleges that conflicts between herself and her white colleague, Devlin Stitt, began escalating in 2021.
According to Garbow, she was in the process of disinfecting a desk using an aerosol spray. Stitt, under the impression that Garbow was purposefully spraying her, allegedly pushed Garbow in the chest. In response, as Garbow extended her left hand to reach for the office phone in order to request assistance, Stitt grabbed the phone to strike Garbow’s hand. In that moment, Garbow claims that she utilized the can to strike Stitt on the head before leaving the room.
Despite Garbow’s departure from the scene, she encouraged her colleagues to summon emergency services for Stitt, who had sustained a head laceration. Following this, Garbow exited the facility and proceeded to her friend’s residence. Subsequently, her friend then drove her to voluntarily surrender herself at the police station.
