Travis Scott’s “Astroworld” festival in Houston, Texas, ended in tragedy after eight people died and hundreds more suffered injuries.
Authorities said the worst of the chaos began around 9:15 p.m. when the crowd of approximately 50,000 concert-goers started a mad dash toward the front of the stage, causing a terrifying stampede.
“The crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage, and people began to panic,” Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña told the media.
At least eight people died in the stampede. Eleven others suffered cardiac arrest and were rushed to the hospital. More than 300 other fans went to the field hospital near the venue.
While names and ages of those who died aren’t known, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo did confirm one of the victims was 10-years-old.
This was the first night of what was supposed to be a 3-day music festival. Organizers have already announced that the second night has been canceled.
The Organizers of Astroworld Festival released the following statement early Saturday morning:
“Our hearts are with the Astroworld Festival family tonight – especially those we lost and their loved ones. We are focused on supporting local officials however we can. With that in mind, the festival will no longer be held on Saturday. As authorities mentioned in their press conference earlier, they are looking into the series of cardiac arrests that took place. If you have any relevant information on this, please reach out to Houston Police. Thank you to our partners at the Houston Police Department, Fire Department, and NRG Park for their response and support.”
