A 32-year-old man from a suburb in Indianapolis walked 351 miles to Wisconsin, to have sex with a young woman, who he believed to be a 14-year-old girl, that he has been talking to on Facebook, according to prosecutors. Turns out, the girl was actually a Winnebago County sheriff’s deputy on the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and he was arrested upon arrival.
Tommy Lee Jenkins now faces charges of using a computer to attempt to persuade, induce, or entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity.
It all started when Jenkins accepted a friend request from Kylee’s profile and soon began having sexual conversations with her, according to a criminal complaint. Federal investigators say Jenkins believed “Kylee” was a 14-year-old girl who lived in Neenah.
The complaint filed in federal court said Jenkins asked “Kylee” for sexual photos, and he also tried to get her to come see him in Whitestown, Indiana. When the “girl” turned him down, he began his 351-mile trek to see her instead.
“I will tell you when I get to Neenah 108 hours by walking,” he said, according to court documents. He reportedly documented his journey by sending the “girl” selfies and pictures of exit signs.
Reports say that on October 10, he texted “Kylee,” letting her know that he made it to the state and that someone had bought him a bus ticket to her town. When he arrived in Winnebago County, he was arrested.
If convicted, he reportedly faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and up to a lifetime of imprisonment. Jenkins is being held in the Brown County Jail.
Reports show that officials in Winnebago County arrested and charged Jenkins with abduction and child sex assault last month, but he was released from jail. At this point, there is no explanation as to why.
