“Gloria Bambo, a South African citizen, and a resident of McKinney, Texas was found hung inside her garage. Gloria resided with her roommate, a white male who found her in the garage Sunday, July 12, 2020. Gloria went missing Thursday and supposedly died in that garage the same day, July 9. Gloria’s body was in that garage for 3 days, where people resided, and repairs were made. No one has heard anything about this Why? We need to know what happened to Gloria?,” read the post. The Collin County NAACP was tagged in the post, along with The Dallas Morning News and other media outlets, Heavy.com reports.

The post picked up more than 250 comments, and it was shared more than 1,600 times. In response, the Collin County NAACP took to Twitter, stating it is awaiting the details of her death. “McKinneyPolice We look forward to the family receiving the results of the autopsy, photos from the scene, a statement from the roommate, and release of the handwriting analysis of the letter. We will not accept the sole statement from the roommate. We will seek justice!” the statement read. On July 23, the McKinney Police Department wrote on Facebook that they believe Bombo’s death was a suicide but that an investigation has been launched and is ongoing. “The McKinney Police Department typically does not comment on suicides, including naming the deceased, but due to the public nature of this case, we feel the need to clarify some inaccuracies,” the post said. The post did not include details about when and where the woman was found, but that her “by her 19-year-old male housemate” found her body.

“A number of posts on social media have speculated about the death of Gloria Bambo, a 20-year-old Black female. Ms. Bambo’s body was discovered by her 19-year-old male housemate, who has fully cooperated during the investigation. All evidence in the case so far leads investigators to believe it was suicide. The Medical Examiner’s findings are still pending, but the preliminary examination of the body has not uncovered any evidence to contradict what was discovered at the residence,” the department wrote. The media’s negligence to report on Bambo’s death sparked criticism from online. “The story from McKinney PD isn’t adding up,” one user wrote. One Twitter user wrote, “RIP Gloria Bambo. The story from McKinney PD isn’t adding up. I still stand by black people aren’t hanging themselves in 2020. We will get the truth #BlackLivesMatter.”

While many speculate foul play, a Twitter account by the name @ ImNotJanel released a statement on behalf of Bambo’s roommate, according to Diaspora 7. The statement was accompanied by several screenshots of supposed text conversations between Bambo and her roommate that ended on July 10. The statement claimed that Bambo struggled with trauma, bipolar and anxiety disorders.

“Gloria Bambo was my roommate, and I’d like to clear up the false narrative that is being spread on social media about her passing. Know that Gloria was diagnosed with Bipolar and anxiety disorder, had endured trauma throughout her life, and was estranged from her family,” the statement read. However, the tweets have since been deleted.
