A man who is believed to be a climate activist smeared cake all over the famous Leonardo da Vinci-drawn portrait, the Mona Lisa.
This past Sunday, a man smeared a cake over the famous Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, which is widely known just as “The Mona Lisa,” CBS News reports. The painting itself is shielded behind bulletproof glass in the Louvre museum in Paris.
The news outlet reports the man who smeared the cake was disguised as an elderly woman in a wheelchair. He then stood up and smooshed the cake over the glass that blocked it.
Security guards quickly tackled the 36-year-old man, but the man then threw roses at the guards while sporting a wig and makeup, CBS News reports.
While being taken away, the man said: “Think about the Earth. There are people who are destroying the Earth. Think about it … all artists, think about the Earth — this is why I did this. Think about the planet.”
An investigation has been opened into the matter, but the portrait was not harmed. The man has been arrested and he may face damage to cultural artifacts charges, CBS News.
