A new adaptation of the classic story of Matilda is currently in the works at Netflix. However, the film, itself, will not be based on the original movie that premiered in 1996, starring Mara Wilson as Matilda Wormwood, a gifted young girl who used her power of telekinesis to fight back against her rude parents and evil principal Miss Trunchbull.
Instead, the new film will be based upon the musical stage play version, Matilda The Musical. In the stage play version, Miss Trunchbull is played by a man. This will also be so for the film as Actor Ralph Fiennes is reportedly expected to portray the wicked principle.
Matilda The Musical has been showing in London since 2011. Two years later, the musical found its way to Broadway until 2017. Matthew Warchus, the musical’s original director, will be a part of the forthcoming film. Tony award-winner Dennis Kelly will write the screenplay.
There currently is no word on when production will begin shooting.
