Former First Lady, Nancy Reagan, passed away Sunday at the age of 94. Not more than a day later, a petition on change.org appeared, asking for rapper Fetty Wap to pay tribute to Mrs. Reagan’s legacy with a performance of “Trap Queen.”
The First Lady was most known for her “Just Say No” campaign against youth substance abuse, and the war against drugs. So why commemorate her with a song calling her the queen of crack and cooking pies? Because Instead of her campaign helping America, the petition accuses the Reagan’s “war on drugs” campaign of causing a major drug epidemic and increasing the number of minority prisoners.
The petition starts off with the phrase, “She was married to the money and introduced America to the stove,” before referring to the former First Lady as “the most famous Trap Queen in American History” and highlighting her husband and the CIA’s role in cocaine trafficking in Central America, subsequently causing the crack epidemic in South LA.
The petition reads, “While her husband, Ronald Reagan was linking up with Papi to flood the streets with narcotics, Nancy was on TV telling kids to ‘Say No To Drugs’. This campaign encouraged strict laws on drug possession which led to large numbers of minorities getting imprisoned. It goes on to read “Blacks and Latinos went to jail in droves for possessing drugs her husband gave them.”
Crack addiction and over-incarceration destroyed communities that were already struggling economically, making the drug trade an unavoidable employment opportunity for many. The petition wants to pay tribute to her contribution in creating the “Trap”, and hopes the song will help “to usher her to a better place. where she’s probably cooking pies with her baby.”
As of Tuesday morning, nearly 5000 people have signed the petition, however Fetty Wap’s camp still hasn’t agreed to do the performance.
What are your thoughts on the petition?
