A Pregnant London Nurse Dies Of COVID-19; Baby Is ”Doing Very Well” After Emergency C-section

On April 7, Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong, a pregnant London nurse at Luton and Dunstable University, was admitted to the hospital days after testing positive for COVID-19.

Agyapong, 28, died on Sunday due to complications of COVID-19, Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust confirmed on Wednesday in a statement.

Doctors and the hospital staff were able to save Agyapong’s unborn child by performing an emergency C-section. A spokeswoman for the UK National Health Service told CNN that the baby is doing” very well.”

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock told BBC News on Thursday,” At least 27 NHS workers have now died from coronavirus.”

An upward of 13,700 people in the UK have passed away due to COVID-19, with more than 100,000 confirmed cases of the virus, according to the government of the UK.

David Carter, CEO of Bedfordshire Hospitals, confirmed Agyapong’s death, “with great sadness.”

” Mary worked here for five years and was a highly valued and loved member of our team, a fantastic nurse, and a great example of what we stand for in this Trust,” Carter’s Wednesday statement reads.

Carter added, “She tested positive for COVID-19 after being tested on the 5th of April and was admitted to the hospital on the 7th April. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Mary’s family and friends at this sad time. We ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this time.”

$146,000 have been donated to Agyapong’s GoFundMe page, which is set up to provide support to Agyapong’s husband and their newborn child.

” Agyapong, also known as Mary Mo, was a blessing to everyone she came across, and her love, care, and sincerity will be irreplaceable,” The fundraising statement reads.

A comment left by Catherine Clewes, who donated, said, “I couldn’t have wished for a better mentor in my sign-off placement. You helped shape the nurse I have become.” Clewes describe the nurse as being “such a lovely person.” Another donator wrote,” it broke our heart when we got the news. Thank you, Mary, for your smile, your strength.”
