Good news, Hunger Games fans! After a successful sequel, Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, has announced a movie prequel for The Hunger Games franchise. This film will be an adaptation of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snake, a novel by Hunger Games trilogy author Suzanne Collins. The book is set to be released on May 19.
In an official statement, Drake said:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Suzanne’s new book has been worth the wait. It offers everything fans could hope for and expect from The Hunger Games while also breaking new ground and introducing an entirely new canvas of characters.”
The prequel will be centered around Coriolanus Snow and set in the Hunger Games universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Snow will be presented as a teenager, a time before his reign on Panem. During this time, Snow will be portrayed as a young, attractive man eager for a chance to change his family’s hardship. When selected to become a mentor for the 10th Hunger Games, Snow is beside himself, as this is his chance for better fortune for his family. Such joy is soon erased once he realizes that his mentee is a young lady from District 12, a diminished district.
Fans can also expect familiar faces behind the scenes as screenwriter Michael Arndt, Francis Lawrence, who directed Catching Fire, and Mockingjay– Part 1 & 2, and Nina Jacobson, a producer for the entire franchise, will all reprise their roles for the prequel.
Suzanne will serve as the executive producer as well as writer of the film’s treatment with the help of Michael Arndt.
In a statement of her own, the author noted:
“Lionsgate has always been the cinematic home of The Hunger Games, and I’m delighted to be returning to them with this new book.”
As of now, there is no new information regarding what other characters will be featured in the film, or a possible cast to fill the roles.
