Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, is keeping her memory alive.
Over 20 years since the tragic loss of Aaliyah at 22, her brother continues to honor her, speaking to her in his heart, mind, and dreams. Haughton shared with People that in times of trouble, he often talks to his sister, and if given the chance now, he would tell her, “I love you, and I’m so proud of you… Let’s enjoy this together.”
Aaliyah’s recent Barbie doll release, which Haughton helped curate, is a fitting tribute to her legacy. It draws inspiration from the iconic outfit she wore in her “One in a Million” music video.
On special occasions, especially her birthday, Rashad honors his sister by listening to her angelic voice, which he still considers “one of the most beautiful voices.” He remembers Aaliyah not only for her music but also for her humor and caring nature, always showing love and warmth to those around her. Rashad emphasizes that Aaliyah’s greatest gift was her kindness, saying, “You have to smile through the pain… and hug people.”
Reflecting on what could have been, he believes Aaliyah would be “the biggest star in the world” today, but he finds comfort in her enduring legacy. He imagines her in heaven, joyfully playing with the new doll, perhaps even reenacting her famous dance moves from “One in a Million.” “She’s going to have a doll with her, and be doing all the dance moves,” he muses.
