A$AP Rocky will remain behind bars for the next two weeks, as prosecutors investigate his role in a street brawl that occurred earlier this week in Sweden.
According to PEOPLE, the rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was arrested on Tuesday after footage surfaced of a violent altercation between Rocky and a man in Stockholm. Although Rocky documented the exchange prior to the incident, which detailed the man’s history of street harassment, the rapper was taken into custody on suspicion of assault.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office said Rocky was arrested with three others, “two of whom were suspected of serious abuse and one of the abuse of the normal degree.” Two days later, the rapper stood before a judge, who, in turn, ruled on a two-week investigation, which would keep the rapper in custody for two-weeks or longer.
“It depends on whether the investigation is completed or not,” the spokesperson told PEOPLE. “If the investigation is finished and the prosecutor chooses to indict, then they will do that. But if the investigation is not completed by then – which is fairly likely given that two weeks is a relatively short time – the prosecutor will request that he is detained for a further two weeks. It is then for the court to decide.”
In response to the decision, Rocky’s lawyer, said, “The prosecutor told us today that he will not probably be finished within two weeks, so my assumption is that he will have completed the investigation within around three-four weeks.”
“We appealed the District Court’s decision today, but the Court of Appeal rejected that. Now we will probably appeal to the Supreme Court, but they will not be able to try this until next week,” Henrik Olsson Lilja added. “The Swedish detention system is a little old fashioned. We don’t have a bail system. We will see what the Supreme Court says because this is quite an interesting issue. The reason that he’s being kept in detention center is that the court ruled that there is a risk that he won’t come back to Sweden if we have a trial. But that is usually applicable to foreigners who are known to be living on the other side of the law, but this is a celebrity so, of course, he will come back. So I don’t understand this decision.”
“[A$AP Rocky] is OK but at the same time, this is a catastrophe concerning his tour. For example, he is supposed to be in London on Sunday. He is very concerned about his fans. So, in that sense, he is not feeling well,” Lilja said.
