Former New England Patriot, Aaron Hernandez, has not given up his claim of innocence. The former tight-end is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of his friend Odin Lloyd in 2013. Hernandez appealed the guilty verdict, not too long after it was read, but that appeal was rejected. About a month ago, another appeal was filed. However, since then, the former athlete has fired his legal team and hired a new high-profile group of lawyers, Deadspin reports.
Jose Baez, who is known for helped Casey Anthony’s acquittal for the 2008 death of her two-year-old child, will lead the legal team. In spite of the allegations that the lawyer knew Anthony killed her daughter and was paid in sexual favors, Baez’s has denied the claims and is eager to prove Hernandez’s innocence.
“I can now confirm that my firm has been retained to represent Mr. Aaron Hernandez in his upcoming trial,” Baez said in a statement. “Mr. Hernandez strongly maintains his innocence, and I plan to establish that before a jury of his peers.”
In addition to Hernandez’s 2015 conviction, he still faces homicide charges for a 2012 drive-by shooting that left two dead. Joining Baez’s team will be Harvard law professor Ronald Sullivan and Alex Spiro, who worked for Thabo Sefolosha in his defense against the NYPD.
