Aaron Hernandez’s fiancée has been granted immunity for the remaining duration of his murder trial, as of Tuesday.
Shayanna Jenkins was granted immunity by Judge Susan Garsh on behalf of a petition filed by prosecutors in January. She is expected to become a prosecution witness, though it is not clear whether she will be called to testify or not. In the chances she is and refuses to abide, she could face some serious jail time. Prosecutors claim Jenkins has already lied to the grand jury at least a dozen times including about the whereabouts of a box she removed from the couple’s home that could have possibly contained evidence (talk about ride or die). Some are assuming that they will toss around possible perjury charges for a deal, in exchange for Jenkins’ testimony.
Prosecutors feel they can put Hernandez at the scene but are having a hard time finding a motive for him to have killed Lloyd. The other problem? The murder weapon has yet to be found. From scenic jury visits to suspect jurors, the trial has been an interesting one. And honestly, it could go either way at this point. Jenkins’ testimony could be a colossal movement in convicting the former Patriots tight end or it could be complete bust for the prosecuting group.
Hernandez is currently on trial for the murder of Odin Lloyd, who was dating Jenkins’ younger sister at the time of his murder. Lloyd was found shot to death in an industrial park near Hernandez and Jenkins’ home in North Attleborough in 2013. Yahoo Sports, reported that Shaneah Jenkins had testified against Hernandez earlier in his trial but details of her testimony have not been discussed.
Jenkins still resides in the home with their two-year-old daughter. The trial will continue Wednesday after a two-day suspension due to inclement weather.
