In recent times, we’ve seen an influx of individuals coming out as “abrosexual.” The term gained visibility through social media and has been leaving users confused. So, to break down the term, abrosexuality is defined as a person who is romantically or sexually attracted to multiple genders. Separate from bisexuality, an individual who is abrosexual may find themselves attracted to different genders at certain periods in their lives. For instance, an abrosexual person could potentially fluctuate between homosexuality, heterosexuality, asexuality, and bisexuality throughout different time periods.

Oftentimes, abrosexuality gets confused with gender fluidity. But, in reality, the term has more to do with sexual orientation rather than how a person chooses to identify their gender. In simpler words, gender fluidity focuses on how someone views their own gender identity while sexual fluidity highlights someone’s attraction changing over time.

Since the term has gained some attention, social media users questioned if abrosexuality is just another fancy way to describe other sexual orientations. But, the significant difference between abrosexuality and any other sexual orientation, is that the gender someone is attracted to can shift periodically over time, rather than being consistently open to any gender.

Since the term has made its way to the internet, a journalist named Emma Flint has recently gone viral after sharing her experience after learning her sexuality. According to 32-year-old Flint, it wasn’t until two years ago that she noticed that her attraction between men and women was changing. While surfing on Instagram, Flint stumbled upon the page of an LGBTQ+ advocate creator who introduced her to the term. Flint believed the term fit her perfectly, despite the comments of friends asking, “Weren’t you just a lesbian last week?”

Regardless of the naysayers, Flint says discovering abrosexuality was a “lightbulb” moment that granted her with more insight about herself. Interestingly enough, the term was first surfaced online after RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage shared the dark green, light green, white, light pink, and dark pink abrosexual flag on her Instagram page in 2021.
