Luigi Mangione Supporters Gift Him Nearly $300,000 to Fund Legal Defense Amid Murder Charges in UnitedHealthcare CEO's Death

Luigi Mangione, 26, pleaded not guilty on Monday in a New York courtroom to state charges related to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

The tragic incident occurred earlier this month outside a Manhattan Hilton hotel, where Thompson was shot in the back. Mangione’s next court appearance is set for February 21st.

State prosecutors claim Mangione was in possession of what is believed to be the murder weapon at the time of his arrest. Surveillance footage reportedly shows a man matching Mangione’s description near the Hilton hotel before and after the shooting, adding to the evidence against him.

Prosecutors are also pursuing state charges by labeling the crime an act of terrorism, which significantly heightens its severity. In addition, Mangione faces federal charges that could carry the death penalty if he is convicted.

The state’s argument centers on the claim that the murder was an act of terrorism, while the federal charges open up the possibility of capital punishment. The dual nature of these charges raises the stakes for Mangione as he prepares for the next phase of legal proceedings.

Mangione is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. He first appeared in federal court last week and is expected to face both state and federal cases in the coming months.

As the trial approaches, more details about the case and the motivations behind the murder are expected to emerge.
