The tragic passing of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy, continues to be shrouded in mystery. As if things couldn’t get any odder, the medical examiner has confirmed that no one has claimed the couple’s bodies.
TMZ spoke with the Office of the Medical Examiner in New Mexico, which confirmed that the list of unclaimed decedents is updated every Monday. Hackman and Betsy’s names appeared on the list on March 24th and remain there today.
While it’s not unusual for bodies to remain unclaimed for a month as family members make funeral arrangements. However, no reason has been listed in this case. Not much is known about the couple’s loved ones, though it has been confirmed that Hackman had three children: Christopher, Leslie, and Elizabeth. Since Hackman left his reported $80 million fortune to Betsy, it’s unclear how the siblings will be able to navigate his finances and final affairs. Hackman previously acknowledged his strained relationship with his children, admitting he wasn’t present during Chris’s childhood, though they’d grown closer in later years.
The “Behind Enemy Lines” star and Betsy were found at their Santa Fe home on February 26th, alongside their deceased dog. The investigation is ongoing, but Betsy reportedly passed on February 12th from hantavirus, while Hackman succumbed to heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s around February 17th or 18th.
Tributes have poured in, with Morgan Freeman honoring Hackman at the Oscars.
