While the entire world is frantically dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, Africans in China are now faced with housing issues as a “blame game” is rearing its ugly head.

Africans are being accused of importing the coronavirus into the country. They are being forced out of homes and hotels because of the wild claim that they brought coronavirus into China.

According to Sahara Reporters, the authorities in China are evicting Africans from their homes and from hotels under the claim that they brought the deadly virus into China, igniting racist attitudes that promote division.

Africans in the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian are being subjected to racism and bad treatment and are now fearing being exposed to the virus. The discrimination is being supported by the government, which is using force to eject the Africans from their homes.

“Foreigners and particularly black people are currently not allowed to access public places including malls, restaurants, and hospitals,” Tobenna Victor, a Nigerian student said.

Meetings between African community leaders in Guangzhou and the government have been held to thaw the tensions, but Chinese authorities are still harassing Africans.

A letter was sent to the Consul-General of Ghana’s Consulate Office in Guangzhou by the Chinese authorities explaining how the city was doing all it can to avoid the spread of the virus in the city.

That letter to the Ghanaian government read: “I would like to keep you informed that for the good of public health, anyone (including Chinese nationals) with overseas-travel records will be required to undergo an epidemic investigation and PCR testing.”

In another notice that was given to all foreigners in the affected province from the Chinese government, it stated: “From April 5th to April 7th, according to relevant government departments, the streets will organize African tenants within their jurisdictions to carry out nucleic acid screening at designated sites (open space in front of the neighborhood committee). Owners/residents are requested to know and inform their families.”

Racism (against darker-skinned people) has always been prevalent in China, it just that now the government is allowing the excuse. The continent of Africa has the lowest numbers of Coronavirus, anywhere. It’s actually ridiculous that the Chinese government would even back this ignorant mess. Just goes to show you, enlightenment is hard to find, and ignorance can be found in abundance!
