Airbnb Announces Permanent Ban On Party Houses

On Tuesday, Airbnb announced its worldwide ban on parties, following a temporary restriction the company set in place two years ago.

The company is permanently banning “disruptive parties and events,” which will include open-invite gatherings. “Party houses,” which allow guests to book housing to throw a large event for just one night, will stay banned.

Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms have grappled with party houses and large events. In 2019, five people were killed in a shooting at one of the company’s bookings, which promoted a ban on party houses and safety measures. In 2020, the company made the ban global, CNBC News reported.

Since the policy went into effect in August 2020, Airbnb has seen a 44% year-over-year drop in the rate of party reports. “The temporary ban has proved effective, and today we are officially codifying the ban as our policy,” the company said.

However, parties can’t always be stopped. Guests sometimes check in to remote properties themselves while the owner is not there and can invite as many people over as they want.

Airbnb said guests who attempt to violate its rules will face consequences which vary from account suspension to full removal from the company. In 2021, more than 6,600 guests were suspended from Airbnb for violating its party ban.
