A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces is officially the first WNBA player to score 1,000 points in a single season.
Days ago, it was reported that Wilson was just points away from hitting this milestone. Wilson reached this incredible milestone during the Aces’ thrilling 84-71 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday with a spectacular pull-up shot from the elbow with just two minutes left on the clock.
Last week, Wilson shattered the single-season scoring record previously held by Seattle Storm star Jewell Loyd, who secured 939 points in a season. After Wilson scored her record-breaking shot, her teammates rushed to celebrate this monumental achievement. The crowd erupted in a roaring ovation, and Wilson took a moment to soak it all in, becoming emotional over her latest feat.
With the Aces holding a one-game lead over Seattle for the No. 4 seed and home-court advantage in the playoffs, they’ve been on a hot streak, winning seven of their last eight games. Meanwhile, the Connecticut Sun, trailing by two games for the No. 2 seed, had a challenging third quarter, shooting just 4 of 16 from the field and failing to score from beyond the arc.
Wilson was a force to be reckoned with, scoring 14 points with four rebounds and two blocks in the third quarter alone, and her dominance was clear as she hit 6 of 8 field goals and both of her 3-point attempts. Kelsey Plum also made a pivotal contribution with 14 points, including a crucial 3-pointer that sparked an 11-1 run, giving the Aces the lead for good.
Wilson and fans have been celebrating her 1,000-point season online, with many eager to see what else she has in store.
