On Monday, Al Sharpton met with Meek Mill and his attorney, Joe Tacopina, in his first steps in an attempt to get the rapper out of jail. According to TMZ, Sharpton says he’s hoping to replace Meek’s controversial judge, Genece Brinkley and convince officials that the rapper’s sentence was unjust.

Sharpton told the publication that his success in getting rappers out of legal trouble dates back to the 90s. He said he helped negotiate with the warden at New York’s Clinton Correctional Facility to get Tupac released from solitary confinement and believes that experience will be a key factor in Meek’s case.

Sharpton is determined to get the Pennsylvania officials to agree that the rapper’s 2-4 year prison sentence for violating probation is harsh and unjust. He says that is the first step in the longstanding fight against the system.
