An Alabama police officer resigned from the Huntsville Police Department after it was revealed that he was still getting paid two months after being convicted of murder.
According to ABC News, the city confirmed that former officer William Darby left on his own accord. He was on paid leave since his May 7th conviction for fatally shooting a suicidal man who held a gun to his own head.
The city defended its decision to place the convicted officer on paid leave, saying it was the normal process until its personnel policies and procedures could be completed.
Jeffery Parker, a lawyer for the victim’s family, said allowing Darby to resign instead of being fired either immediately after the 2018 killing or after his murder conviction was unacceptable and called it “a bizarre and unnecessary distraction.”
