How does the son of Cuban immigrants go from owning a chain of pizza restaurants in California to owning his own basketball team? Ask Alex Meruelo, the new owner of the Atlanta Hawks.
Meruelo’s entrepreneurial spirit started in high school when his father who owned a bridal and tuxedo business and leased the tuxedo part to him. From there he’s launched La Pizza Loca, owned a TV station in Los Angeles and owned a hotel and casino in Reno, Nevada. Now Alex finds himself as the first latino owner of an NBA team.
“I want to bring a championship to the city of Atlanta” says Meruelo. A press conference is scheduled for today to announce Alex joining the Hawks family as well as buying Phillips Arena.
