Alex Murdaugh, the South Carolina lawyer whose wife and son were fatally shot in June, has turned himself in on charges related to him plotting his own murder in a bizarre insurance fraud scheme.
According to CNN, Murdaugh arrived at the Hampton County Law Enforcement Center Thursday morning and is expected to appear in court later today. He has been charged with insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and filing a false police report.
Court documents claim Murdaugh arranged for a former client to kill him so his surviving son could collect a $10 million payout from his life insurance policy. Murdaugh had himself shot in the head on a roadway on September 4 but survived the attempt.
He admitted to authorities on Monday that he had conspired with a man identified as Curtis Edward Smith to kill him as part of the scam.
