Alijah Arenas’ Cybertruck crashed into a tree early Thursday morning in an L.A. suburb, and investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor.
According to law enforcement sources who spoke with TMZ, LAPD officers on the scene found no signs of intoxication just moments after the 18-year-old 5-star basketball recruit was pulled from his burning vehicle around 4:55 AM. After Arenas was transported to a local hospital, authorities attempted a follow-up, but “the soon-to-be USC basketball star was already intubated,” meaning no blood draw was performed.
Law enforcement believes that “speed was the main factor” in the violent, one-car crash, made worse by a “young driver and a fast vehicle.” Elon Musk’s Cybertruck, depending on the model, can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in about 2.6 seconds. Currently, “there’s no criminal investigation underway,” authorities confirmed.
As for Arenas’ condition, a family spokesperson provided an update on Friday, telling TMZ the “young hooper was making solid progress…but was not yet out of the woods.”
The crash, which left the Cybertruck a mangled wreck, was captured on video, showing the fiery aftermath. Arenas, the son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas and reality star Laura Govan, had been placed into an induced coma shortly after the accident.
