Women are raised to accept that we will eventually be married, and play the role of wife. But being a wife isn’t for everyone. Not every woman’s dream is to be someone else’s companion, or commit to a lifetime of union. Some are ok with being single, or serial dating without the commitment. Kourtney Kardashian is one, even Shonda Rhimes. And while they all have money in common, they also don’t believe in holy matrimony. Keep reading to see who else doesn’t believe.
1. Charlize Theron – Gorgeous and talented actress Charlize Theron told E! that the idea of marriage was something she was never too fond of. Instead she tells how she’d prefer a long term relationship similar to Oprah, and Kourtney, instead of the wedding bells and lifetime commitment.
2. Kourtney Kardashian – Kourtney was in a nine year relationship with her long time boyfriend Scott Disick. They had three children and she still didn’t want to get married. Scott was actually the one pushing for marriage, but ultimately decided to give it up when he saw how hell-bent Kourtney was set on not getting married. He told Ryan Seacrest in a 2013 interview, “I used to want to get married more than she did, and then, being that she was always so not interested, I’ve decided not to be”.
3. Shonda Rhimes – The queen of Thursday night television wrote in her book Years of Yes, how she never wants to tie the knot. She didn’t give a reason, but did reveal that she’s so certain in not wanting to commit, she’s even turned down a proposal before.
4. Diane Keaton – Throughout her entire career, Diane has been very open about her personal distaste of marriage. In an interview with More Magazine, she explicitly says “I’m attracted to men, and I love playing around with them. But I life shared together? That’s a different world. I think you have to be somebody who can compromise and be realistic. I could never do it. Ever.”
5. Oprah Winfrey – Oprah may be in a long term relationship (30 years to be exact) but she has zero plans in tying the knot. With the multiple empires she has to oversee, getting married just isn’t apart of the picture for her. In an interview with Access Hollywood a while back, Ms. Winfrey said “If I had the title ‘wife,’ I think there would be other expectations for what a wife is and what a wife does.” And aint nobody got time for that.
Aside from having fat bank accounts, all of these women have one thing in common: and that’s their decision to go against the norm and avoid holy matrimony. What do you think? Is marriage for you, or something you were taught?
