Lawyers for News Group Newspapers presented texts on Thursday in court sent by Amber Heard to her mom back in 2013, calling Johnny Depp “violent and crazy” and said, “I’m heartbroken that this is who I love.”
On the fourth day of her testimony for the NGN versus Johnny Depp libel case, Heard told the High Court that Depp is a “remarkable man” when he is “clean and sober” but that the “other side of him was a monster.” The actress was questioned Thursday by Sasha Wass, the attorney for NGN. In her testimony, Heard told Wass, “I was so in love with Johnny at that time. We had had a wonderful year together where he was sober and clean, and that is how I got to know him. And Johnny, when he was like that, (is) generous, loving, he is a remarkable man when he is like that.” She also said she “always held out hope” that he would get clean.
Depp is suing the NGN, the publisher of ‘The Sun,’ and its executive editor Dan Wootton, over an April 2018 article titled, “Gone Potty: How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife-beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?” Depp’s legal team says the article insinuated that there was “overwhelming evidence” of Depp’s 14 domestic violence allegations by Heard, that left her “in fear for her life.” The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor testified Wednesday that Heard was actually the abusive one and claimed she has a violent history with him.
Wass read aloud in court, text messages that Heard sent her mother on March 22 and 23, 2013. One read, “It’s terrible, mum. I don’t know what to do.” Followed by, “He’s nuts, mum. Violent and crazy. I’m heartbroken that this is who I love.” In a third message, she wrote, “I feel like I’m on a very fast train that’s about to explode, but I don’t want to jump off and leave my love behind. So I stay on the train, even though I know it’s about to explode.”
The texts were allegedly sent the night of a domestic violence incident between the couple. In her first witness statement, Heard said during an argument, Depp hit her with the back of his hand, causing her blood to splatter on the wall. She said the argument was over a painting done by her ex-partner Tasya van Ree, that was hanging in her Los Angeles home. Depp denied the incident.
NGN still maintains that the “wife beater” article is true, claiming the actor had been “controlling and verbally and physically abusive towards Ms. Heard, particularly when he was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.” The case is set to conclude next week, legal teams from both parties will present closing submissions on Monday and Tuesday.
