Amber Heard took the stand Wednesday, in the Johnny Depp Libel case against British tabloid ‘The Sun.’ According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress alleged that her ex-husband threw 30 bottles of liquor at her like “grenades” during a drunken rampage.
“He started picking them up one by one and throwing them like grenades or bombs,” Heard said. “One after the other after the other, in my direction, and I felt glass breaking behind me.” She said the incident happened in March 2015, during a trip to Australia. The couple was staying at a rental property on the Gold Coast while Depp filmed one of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films. She said Depp began throwing the “30 or so bottles” after getting into an argument about his excessive drinking. Heard told the London High Court that it was basically a “three-day hostage situation” and said Depp was “completely out of his mind and out of control” due to him being both intoxicated and high on cocaine and MDMA. She also said he “screamed” at her while he put out a cigarette on his own cheek, saying he couldn’t feel the pain.
Heard’s testimony is all part of the tabloid’s defense, using the actress’s 14 allegations of violence by Depp between 2013 and 2016, as a basis for their previous claims. The former couple met on the set of the 2011 film, ‘The Rum Diary.’ They were married in February 2015. Heard filed for divorce the next year, and it was finalized in 2017. In written testimony, Heard said that throughout their relationship Depp subjected her to “punching, slapping, kicking, head-butting and choking,” on multiple occasions. She said she feared for her life and that her ex-husband blamed the alleged attacks on “a self-created third party,” he called “the monster.”
Meanwhile, Depp is suing ‘The Sun’s’ publisher, News Group Newspapers, and its executive editor, Dan Wootton, over the April 2018 article they printed, calling the actor a “wife-beater. Depp’s attorney, Eleanor Laws says, the domestic violence allegations against him are false, and Heard was the actual aggressor in their marriage. Laws alleges Heard was the one who threw the liquor bottles that night in Australia, and that one of Depp’s fingers became partially severed as a result. Heard had worked herself “into a rage,” and had a habit of just “losing it,” Laws said.
Heard previously testified about an alleged incident in 2015, where she claimed Depp dragged her through their Los Angeles apartment while punching her in the head, slapping her and pulling out clumps of her hair. The actress referred to it as “one of the worst and most violent nights” of the couple’s relationship. However, Depp’s lawyer accused Heard of lying about the incident, playing a clip of her appearance on James Corden’s ‘The Late Late Show,’ the day after the alleged attack. Laws said the video showed no signs of the two black eyes, broken nose, broken rib, or bruises Heard claims she sustained the previous night. But The actress’s make-up artist said in an involuntary testimony, that the concealer she used was “very effective.” Laws also said that medical notes made by a nurse who saw Heard after the incident, failed to mention any of the injuries, just bleeding on her lip. The attorney suggested the bleeding was a result of Heard biting her lip herself.
Heard refuted all claims made against her, only admitting to throwing one bottle, saying, “I regret I did that.” Depp and several of his current and former employees backed his version of events. The actor also testified that he had been abused by Heard not the other way around, and said she had a history of violent tendencies against him. Heard will have her final day of testimony in the case on Thursday.
