American Airlines canceled more than 1,000 flights over Halloween weekend, claiming issues with weather and staffing.
The airline canceled 527 flights, or 19 percent of all of its planned flights for Sunday, accounting for nearly one-third of all of the country’s cancelations. This is on top of the 543 flights canceled on Saturday, which is 20 percent of its total planned flights for that day.
Another 407 flights were delayed on Saturday, and 31 flights have been postponed on Sunday so far.
The COO of American Airlines, David Seymour, blamed the delays on poor weather conditions around the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, which is the airline’s home base.
“With additional weather throughout the system, our staffing begins to run tight as crew members end up out of their regular flight sequences,” Seymour explained.
“To make sure we are taking care of our customers and providing scheduling certainty for our crews, we have adjusted our operation for the last few days this month by proactively canceling some flights,” Seymour continued.
