American Airlines is making a major move toward keeping passengers connected in the air. Starting January 2026, the airline will begin offering its loyalty program members free Wi-Fi on 90% of its fleet.
The announcement positions American as the latest major U.S. airline to make in-flight internet more accessible. In a press release, the carrier touted that it would offer internet on “more planes than any other domestic carrier.”
American has long lagged behind competitors in this space, continuing to charge for internet access while other airlines began offering the service at no cost. Until now, Wi-Fi on American flights ranged from $10 per trip to $599 annually, depending on the plan.
The new offering comes after a series of successful trial runs, during which American tested the reliability of its free Wi-Fi service and found it had “surpassed performance expectations.”
The rollout is being backed by AT&T, which is sponsoring the service and helping American install the required equipment across its fleet. This sponsorship helps offset the massive cost of upgrading onboard connectivity systems.
American’s move follows in the footsteps of JetBlue, which has been offering free Wi-Fi since 2013. Delta Air Lines launched its version of the perk on most flights in 2023, and United Airlines recently announced that it will begin using Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet to provide free in-flight access by the end of this year, with plans to expand across its fleet.
For American Airlines passengers who want to take advantage of the new perk, all it takes is signing up for the airline’s free loyalty program.
